The Sprite Uncontainable Rooftop Experiences are a much needed break from the American Idol format talent shows that seems to have taken over mainstream television. Following a recent nationwide search for Hip-Hop talent, participants have been narrowed down to 18 finalists.
These 18 need to bring their ‘A game’ in order to secure 1 of 6 spots in the final round. I have no doubts the competition will be fierce. The top 18 finalists’ performances in dance, emceeing and graffiti are made up of the top six participants in each category. However this doesn’t include turntablists (DJ’s). Missed opportunity there, Sprite should have included that category.
The rap battle is something that you can’t fake. Emcees will call you out if you don’t have what it takes. The audience is always candid & unforgiving. If you don’t engage the crowd while you dismantle your opponent with Punch lines, Puns & Superior Wordplay then you will quickly be devoured on stage.
The same is true for the Dance battles also being showcased. I’m excited to see what kind of masterpieces the Graffiti artists will give us. Graffiti is not just visual art, it’s Visual Poetry. Where emcees have hundreds of syllables to express themselves, the graf artist must convey his message in a single piece.
A respectable panel of judges (Simba, Reason and Falko) will no doubt pick the Justin Biebers from the Johnny Blazes, but if I know anything, it is the Crowd is the ultimate decision maker.
The 6 finalists will perform on stage at the Sprite Uncontainable Hip-Hop Festival on 1 September with American rapper Talib Kweli. I don’t need to convince you what an amazing opportunity this is.
The Sprite Uncontainable Rooftop Experiences will take place inDurbanat Moyo in Ushaka Marine World on 14 July; inCape Townat the Loop on 20 July; and inJohannesburgat Shine Studios on 28 July.
Live Performances by Liquid KZN, Sky Wander, ABDUS, DJ’s 2Dexa & Manelise on the ones & two’s.
